In the buzzing blue box

strapped to my back,

there’s our last honeybees.

If you need a queen, I have that,

if you need a queen to kill that queen,

I have that too.

I have in my jacket

out-of-print trail maps

outlining every overgrown egress.

I can improvise nutrition

from a scrapped comb

and white pine bark;

with patience from a whipped line,

the settled past’s hooked mouth

tugs toward the surface.

I hold memories of you in the antigens.

I carry your hairbrush to better

understand your thoughts.

The stings don’t slow me down:

I am thickened. This pride

that once distanced you

packs up light as twine.
